The Golden Guide to Bearded Dragon Care was designed for beginning reptile keepers who would like to provide the best possible care for their bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps and related species). This book is split into two parts. Part 1: Introduction deals with the primary considerations related to the acquisition, selection, and purchase of bearded dragons. If you have no idea what a bearded dragon is, check out the section “Meet the Bearded Dragon”.

For a short and sweet primer on buying your very first beardie, read “Buying a Dragon for the First Time”. Part 2: Bearded Dragon Care contains the meat of the book. In this part of the book, I’m going to share with you the best practices that I’ve learned over the years. Caring for bearded dragons is not complicated at all; you just need to know what to do, and how to do it.

Are you a little nervous about touching and holding your bearded dragon? Read the section “Proper Handling” for some expert tips on handling beardies. For a comprehensive guide on feeding beardies, head over to the section “The Proper Bearded Dragon Diet”. Learn more about animal matters, and how to feed them, in the section “Additional Feeding Guidelines: Insects & Worms”. Bearded dragons consume both plant matter and animal matter. I discuss veggies and fruits in “Feeding Guidelines for Vegetables/Plant Matter”.

Water is a vital component of any reptile’s diet. Find out how you can properly hydrate a lizard by reading the section “Hydration Tips”. Ready to buy your first bearded dragon? Don’t buy one until you’ve prepared its habitat! Head over to “Creating the Perfect Habitat for Your Bearded Dragon” to learn more about this vital step. For more information about lizard furniture, read “Accessorizing the Terrarium”.

Bedding materials are tackled separately in “Notes on Choosing Substrates”. Lizards also need to be bathed once a week. Learn more in the section “Are You Ready to Bathe a Lizard?”. Heating and lighting systems are also discussed in “Understanding Heat & Light for Reptile Enclosures”.

I wrote this book to help aspiring reptile enthusiasts with their own bearded dragons. It can be a bumpy ride sometimes, especially if you’re just getting used to the day/night cycle, and the feeding requirements, of this species. But trust me, over time, you will get used to the process and you will be happy with the results.
