Neurodiversity-Affirming Group Therapy (3 CEs)

Neurodiversity-affirming care requires shifts on all levels of care. Group therapy presents unique challenges, dynamics, and opportunities for growth. This course provides a neurodiversity-affirming approach to mental health care implemented into a group therapy setting. Gather the knowledge to conduct affirming groups, including an analysis of existing research, application of the neurodiversity paradigm to group therapy, and development of group structures based on the principles of neurodiversity-affirming care.

Cost

Presenter

Dr. Amy Marschall is a licensed clinical psychologist in South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Florida, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and New York, PsyPact provider, and registered psychologist in New Zealand. She has facilitated groups for children, adolescents, and adults on topics including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, ADHD, and autistic experiences.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply group therapy interventions and approaches through a lens of neurodiversity-affirming care.
  2. Evaluate existing groups through the neurodiversity-affirming lens and develop and adapt these approaches to be affirming.
  3. Formulate structures of therapy groups for specific diagnoses, symptom sets, and presenting problems using the neurodiversity paradigm as a guide.
  4. Build methods for addressing conflicts and challenges that arise in a group therapy setting.
  5. Assess three therapy group formats for their appropriateness in neurodiversity-affirming care.

This intermediate to advanced course is appropriate for all mental health professionals, including psychologists, social workers, school psychologists, counselors, school counselors, marriage and family therapists, and any other mental professional who conducts group therapy.
