The MANA WĀHINE collection, six knitwear designs inspired by Aotearoa and Hawai’i, is the inaugural series from the AROHA | ALOHA project highlighting the works of modern indigenous makers.
What does abundance mean to you? This pullover features the kumara motif, a common motif used in traditional weaving and other forms of traditional Māori art. The humble sweet potato signifies abundance, and often in contexts where food was so bountiful it was to be shared among others. What good does abundance do if it is just hoarded and not shared with others? Fill up your cup with enough for you, and let the remaining spread to others…

Fingering/4-ply
  • Purl Soho Good Wool (100% Andean highland wool; 100 g;383yds).4(4,4,5,5)(6,6,7,7,8)skeinsinWinter Grass.
  • Fully Spun Postscript Fingering (100% Merino; 20 g; 78 yds). 3 (3, 3, 3, 3) (4, 4, 4, 4, 4) skeins each in Mulled Wine, Sweet Potato Pie, Late Summer.
NEEDLES
  • US 5/3.75 mm, US 6/4 mm or size needed to obtain gauge, 32 in./60 cm circular needle, and double-pointed needles or magic loop needle for sleeves.
GAUGE
  • 28 sts and 36 rnds over 4 in./10 cm in colorwork stitch with US 6 and after blocking.
