AN ENDMILL DOES NOT DIE IN HOURS. IT DIES IN MINUTES.

Most CNC pricing calculators multiply part area by material cost and add an hourly rate.

That is not what a sheet of birch costs you, and it is why shops quote a job, cut it, and

wonder where the money went.

SHEET YIELD, NOT PART AREA. You do not buy square inches, you buy sheets. Clamping

margin, tabs and the offcut you cannot nest another part into are paid-for material

that leaves as waste. Turn 80% of a sheet into parts and your real material cost is

materially higher than the part area suggests.

CUTTERS ARE RATED IN CUT MINUTES. A $24 endmill good for 240 cut minutes owes about a

dime a minute, every minute it is in the material, and maple, MDF and melamine burn

through that life several times faster than plywood does. Charge it by the hour and

short jobs subsidise long ones. This workbook charges it by the minute, because that

is the unit tool life is actually measured in.

THE VACUUM PUMP IS NOT FREE. Spindle, dust collector and vacuum pump together draw

more than most shops assume, and the pump runs for the whole job.

SPOILBOARD AND COLLETS ARE CONSUMABLES. A spoilboard gets resurfaced until it is scrap.

A collet that has been over-torqued will not hold a cutter true. Both come out of job

revenue whether you budgeted for them or not.

SCRAPPED PARTS. Tearout, a lifted part, lost registration and a cutter that snapped

mid-cut all produce parts you cannot sell. The good ones have to carry that cost, and

the way to handle it is to divide by your good-part rate.

MARKETPLACE FEES. You cannot add your margin and then subtract fees. That arithmetic

does not leave you with your margin. The price has to be solved backwards.

On the worked example included, a shop targeting 35% using the standard method actually

earns 17.08%. That one row leaves $10.53 on the table, and the workbook shows that gap

on every row you enter.
