The Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel Budget Calculator Pack: Seven linked calculators, every formula checked by recalculation
Seven calculators for budgeting a kitchen or bathroom remodel from your own quotes, not from anyone's average. Sheet 1 adds up cabinets, counters and flooring by the square foot, fixtures, appliances and labor; sheet 2 adds a contingency reserve and shows the cost per square foot it implies ($301.22 in the worked example). Later sheets work out a remodel loan payment, compare a HELOC paid interest-only against one paid down from the first month, test which tasks are worth doing yourself at what your hours are worth, lay three contractor bids side by side line by line, and show what comes back at sale using a recoup share you estimate. Every figure is an example for you to overwrite. These are estimates, not financial, tax or legal advice. Every formula was recalculated and checked against an independent implementation before this shipped.
What is in it
7 calculators, one per sheet. Overwrite the blue cells with your own numbers and everything else follows. Nothing is locked, there are no macros, and it opens in Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice and Google Sheets.
- Budget by line item: What do cabinets, counters, flooring, fixtures and labor add up to?
- Reserve and cost per sq ft: What does a contingency add, and what is that per square foot?
- Remodel loan payment: What does borrowing for the remodel cost a month and in all?
- HELOC interest or paydown: Interest-only now, or paying it down from the first month?
- DIY vs hire: Which tasks are worth doing yourself at what your hours are worth?
- Contractor bids line by line: How do three bids compare, total and line by line?
- Value recouped at sale: If you sell, how much of the remodel comes back, and what did it cost to live with?
Every formula was checked
This pack contains 58 formulas. Before it was published, every one of them was recalculated by a spreadsheet engine and compared against an independent implementation of the same arithmetic written in Python. All 58 agreed to within a cent, and the workbook carries a Verification sheet saying so.
That is an unusual thing to be able to claim about a spreadsheet, and it is the main reason to buy this one rather than download a free template. A formula that looks right and is wrong is worse than no formula at all, because you will act on it.
What each calculator assumes
There is a sheet listing this, because a calculator that hides its assumptions is just a number generator:
- Every line is a price you enter; nothing here is a benchmark for what a kitchen or bathroom costs. Countertop prices are taken as installed. Flooring waste is a share of floor area. Sales tax and delivery are inside the prices you enter.
- The reserve is a share of the whole budget and is spent only if something goes wrong; this sheet plans for it as if it will be. Cost per square foot divides by the room's floor area and describes this budget only: it is not a figure to compare with anyone else's room.
- A fixed-rate loan with level monthly payments and no fees. A loan fee rolled into the balance belongs in the budget on sheet 2. Interest is not discounted for time and no tax deduction is modeled.
- The rate stays where you enter it for the whole life of the line; a variable HELOC rate will not. The whole amount is drawn at once and nothing more is drawn. Payments are monthly and level within each phase.
- Your time is valued at one rate for every task. Materials cost the same whichever way the task is done, so they are left out. A redo, a mistake or a warranty you give up by doing it yourself is not priced: add hours for it.
- Each bid is split into the same five lines; move a bid's figures so each line covers the same work before comparing. Price is the only thing compared: schedule, warranty, materials and who pulls the permit are not.
- The recoup share is yours; this pack states no figure for what any remodel returns. Selling costs apply to the added value only. Money is not discounted for time, and taxes on the sale are not modeled.
What this is not
Not financial, tax or legal advice, and not a recommendation to buy, sell, borrow or sign anything. These are calculators: they show what a choice costs, not which choice is right for you. Where a published rate or threshold is used it is the one current when the pack was built; those change, the arithmetic does not.
Honest about the format
One .xlsx workbook, 7 calculator sheets plus Start Here, Assumptions and Verification. Not a PDF, not a physical product, not a Notion template. Available immediately after purchase; nothing ships.
