Day of the Dead Art Project, Día de los Muertos Mixed Media, High School Art

Students learn the history and symbols of Día de los Muertos (ofrendas, calaveras, marigolds, sugar skulls), sketch several ideas, then make a mixed media piece with a personal or cultural connection. It ends with a gallery walk and peer critique.

What's included

• Teacher instructions with a 10-day schedule
• 33-slide slideshow: traditions, symbols, requirements, student examples and step-by-step directions (choose 4 small sketches or 1 large one)
• Research and planning handout
• Reflection and critique handout

Good to know

• About 2 weeks (10 class periods)
• High school Art 1 or Art 2, adaptable for middle school
• Materials: art paper or canvas and at least two media. I keep Art 1 to dry media and let Art 2 use paint.
• Best for October and early November
