My parents do not exercise nearly enough, and like a lot of parents as they get older, they were not doing the kind of strength and balance training that can help them stay independent.

Last year, my mom stumbled on a curb during a walk and fractured her knee. Thankfully, it wasn’t her hip, but it was a wake up call for me. A hip fracture in an older adult is far more serious than most people realize: the risk of death is roughly 5-8x higher during the first 3 months afterward, and about 1 in 5 older adults die within a year. I realized I didn’t want to wait until something more serious happened before helping my parents build the strength and balance that could help keep them independent.

So I researched the exercises and training methods associated with healthy aging, strength, balance, mobility, and fall prevention, then turned that research into a simple 12 week program for my parents.

What’s Inside

  • A complete 12 week exercise program designed for adults ages 55 to 75 who have not been consistently active.
  • A simple weekly workout schedule showing exactly what to do each day, including strength, balance, core, grip training, walking, and recovery.
  • Three progressive training phases so your parents can start easy and gradually increase their strength, balance, and exercise difficulty over 12 weeks.
  • Step by step instructions for every exercise, including chair squats, incline push ups, calf raises, hip abduction, single leg balance, bird dogs, dead bugs, farmer’s walks, rows, and more.
  • Exercise modifications for beginners so movements can be made easier depending on strength, balance, mobility, or discomfort.
  • The reason behind each exercise, explaining how it relates to everyday abilities like getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, maintaining balance, carrying things, and reducing fall risk.
  • Warm up and cool down routines to use before and after strength workouts.
  • A progressive walking plan plus an optional Tai Chi day to improve activity levels and balance.
  • Clear safety guidelines and warning signs explaining when to modify an exercise, stop exercising, or speak with a doctor.
  • A printable 12 week habit tracker so your parents can check off workouts and see their consistency over time.
  • Weekly progress check ins to track strength, balance, pain, consistency, and how they feel compared with when they started.
  • A plan for what to do after the 12 weeks so they can continue progressing instead of simply finishing the program and stopping.
  • Minimal equipment required: a sturdy chair, dumbbells, comfortable shoes, and an optional resistance band. No gym membership required.

It tells you exactly:

  • what exercises to do
  • how often to do them
  • why they matter
  • how to modify them safely
  • how to gradually increase the difficulty as your parents get stronger.

The goal is not to turn our parents into athletes. It is to help them stay strong enough to keep doing the things they love for as long as possible.
