Character Backpack | Creative Character Analysis & Critical Thinking Funsheet | Grades 6β8
π CHARACTER BACKPACK
Every Item Tells a Story!
What does a fictional character carry with them β beyond what we can see?
A treasured possession. A forgotten memory. A hidden fear. A strength they don't even realise they have.
Sometimes, the most important things we carry aren't objects at all.
Introducing Character Backpack, a creative reading-response funsheet that challenges learners to explore a fictional character's personality, experiences, motivations and emotional journey.
Designed for Grades 6β8, this activity transforms character analysis into an imaginative investigation.
π WHAT'S INSIDE THEIR BACKPACK?
Learners imagine what a fictional character might carry in their backpack.
But there's a twist!
Every item must reveal something meaningful about the character.
Through drawing, writing and reflection, learners investigate:
β Character identity β Who are they, and what matters to them?
β The character's journey β Where are they going, and what challenges might they face?
β Emotional baggage β What feelings, memories or experiences do they carry?
β Strengths and skills β What qualities help them along the way?
β Challenges and needs β What might they need to overcome future obstacles?
β Meaningful possessions β What objects would reveal their personality or experiences?
π§ THINK BEYOND THE BACKPACK!
The activity concludes with three thought-provoking questions.
HOW THESE ITEMS HELP
How might the chosen objects support the character during their journey?
THINK DEEPER
If you could add one important item to the backpack, what would it be and why?
ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE
How might a different character interpret the contents of this backpack?
These questions encourage learners to explore character development, symbolism, inference and perspective.
