The Unapologetic Ask
The Unapologetic Ask Guide
A simple way to turn a need into a request
You might have grown up thinking that having needs made you needy, that asking meant burdening someone. This guide gives you the difference between a need and a demand, and a simple formula for asking clearly: I feel [emotion] when [situation]. What I need is [need].
The above format isn’t something I invented. It comes from Nonviolent Communication, a framework developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, built on the idea that naming a feeling and a need is the clearest path from confusion to connection (Rosenberg, n.d.)
Inside this guide:
• The difference between a need and a demand
• The I Feel, I Need formula
• A 15-day practice tracker
This won't undo years of going without in one guide. What it will give you is a taste of what it feels like to ask for something small and let yourself receive it. You don't have to keep guessing what everyone else needs while ignoring your own.
There's a process here, one other people have used to ask plainly without bracing for backlash, and to receive without guilt. 💌
