Normal Teen Life in Care: Saying Yes, Staying Safe, Getting Ready for Adulthood

Help the young person in your care do normal teen things, stay on track in school and head into adulthood with you still behind them. A 2-hour training with a certificate.

What this course is

This is the fifth course in the Family Who Stepped In series. It's for foster parents, kinship caregivers and guardians raising a teenager, including grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends, licensed or not. It's for the caregiver who isn't sure what they're allowed to say yes to, who's tired of the same fights over rules, or who's worried about what happens when their teen turns eighteen. Michael Gaither is an adoptee who began life in foster care, and he worked 30 years in education as a teacher and a principal.

What you'll be able to do

  • Read what a teen in care may be carrying, and respond to pulling away without taking it personally.
  • Think through risk and say yes to sports, jobs, sleepovers and phones the way a careful parent would.
  • Set a few clear house rules and repair the relationship after a teen messes up.
  • Keep your teen on track with credits and plan for college, training, the military or work.
  • Teach everyday adult skills, track down key documents and stay connected after eighteen.

How the certificate works

  1. Take the opening quiz as a warm-up. It doesn't count toward your certificate.
  2. Work through the six lessons in order. Each one comes with a printable page you can fill in and keep.
  3. Type your plan right into the course, one line at a time. Each line comes with an example to help you.
  4. Pass the final quiz with at least 8 out of 10. You can retake it as many times as you need.
  5. Answer a short evaluation, and your certificate unlocks for 2 training hours.

Please check with your licensing worker or agency about how many hours they accept for self-paced training.

For agencies

Agencies can license this course for all of their foster and kin families. You can set that up by emailing hello@beyondthemomentadoptionstudio.com.
