The screens say all is well. The stars say otherwise.

Fifty-one degrees south. Four in the morning. The satellites say all is well.

Eli Van Der Berg knows better. A Cape Flats boy hooked on tik at thirteen, he should have died three times. Twenty years clean, he trusts only three things: his father's Bible, a pawnshop sextant, and the stars.

Now his ship has been hired for a job that makes no sense. The positions on the screens are being moved. A crewmate is reporting in secret. And a dead Norwegian's charts point south, into a fog where seafarers hear the voices of the people they lost.

At the bottom of the world something is waiting. And the man who sent them there has spent his whole life making sure no one looks up.

Hold the watch. Whatever happens, look up.

INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS

Dominic Neville Everts grew up in Mitchell's Plain on the Cape Flats and was using drugs by thirteen. By the grace of God he got clean, went to sea with nothing, and paid his own way up to the bridge. Today he is a Dynamic Positioning Officer working offshore around the world. This novel is drawn from his own life.
