Funnel Vision Light
Yarn: light fingering weight, approximately 100 g
Shown in Fibernymph Dye Works Heavenly (80% wool, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon; 435 yds./398 m per 3.5 oz./100 g skein) in Dark to Denim gradient, one skein
Needles: US 2.5/3.0 mm
Most of the cowl can be knit comfortably on a 16” circular needle. As the stitch count rapidly increases for the flare, however, it may be necessary to transfer stitches to a 24” and/or 32” circular. Adjust circular needle length as needed for comfort. DPNs or a long circular and the magic loop method may be used as well.
Gauge: 22 stitches & 31 rounds = 4 in./10 cm in brioche stitch in the round
Finished dimensions: 22 in./56 cm circumference at top, 51 in./129.5 cm at bottom, and 14 in./35.5 cm in length
This cozy brioche stitch cowl creates the look of a turtleneck sweater without the bulk of the full garment and offers a bit more warmth than a plain tube. Simple brioche increases create a flare at the bottom that allows it to sit neatly on your shoulders. The long straight portion provides the option to wear it folded down to cover your neck or unfolded to cover your face as well. A tubular cast-on and bind-off give a refined look to the edges.
To knit this pattern, you need to know how to:
- work basic brioche stitch in the round,
- work simple brioche increases,
- do a provisional cast-on, and
- graft live stitches.
Instructions are given for the cast-on and bind-off.
A note about yarn: The sample used all of the yarn specified, and the skein that was used weighed slightly more than 100 g. If you have less yarn than specified, you can shorten the neck/straight portion of the cowl or end it before working all of the increases in the flare. Many yarns classified as light fingering weight will have more than 450 yds./411 m per 100 g and will be suitable for this pattern.
