»Am Grabe des Freundes« ist dieses Stück untertitelt und verweist damit eindeutig, worum es sich bei dem einsätzigen Musikstück handelt. Zudem gibt die Widmung weiteren Aufschluss über die Beweggründe der Komposition: »Seinem Freunde Robert Schäfer in Chemnitz gewidmet«. Es ist ein Trauergesang auf dem Kontrabass, anspruchsvoll sowohl für den Solisten wie für den begleitenden Pianisten.

This piece is subtitled "Am Grabe des Freundes" (At the Grave of a Friend) and thus clearly indicates what the one-movement piece of music is about. The dedication also provides further information about the motivation behind the composition: "Dedicated to his friend Robert Schäfer in Chemnitz". It is a funeral dirge on the double bass, demanding for both the soloist and the accompanying pianist.
