The Three Phases of Analysis: A Self-Editing System for Your Draft

This isn't line editing or copy editing for publication (that comes later). It's the deeper pass that makes sure your narrative holds together: that the invisible part of writing holds firm underneath and the prose is doing its job before anyone else reads it.

The system moves through three phases in a deliberate order:

Phase 1: The Foundation: Is the scene actually working? Catch the "something is happening, but nothing IS happening" issues, where pages fill with exposition and description instead of your characters' emotional experiences and choices.

Phase 2: Plot & Story: With the foundation solid, go deeper into how the narrative is told. Track whether your plot has enough context to function and whether it's moving through your characters rather than around them.

Phase 3: The Polish Check: Now the words matter. Loose line work for clarity: logical narrative movement, tightening dialogue, breaking up thick passages, and cutting filter words and passive constructions.
