Finding the Names — Installment 78 (Roll 10, 1842–1844) — FREE

Installment 78 of Finding the Names OPENS Roll 10 — New Orleans Inward Manifests, 1842–1844 (National Archives Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 10, NAID 173900399), images 1–120: 557 people on 52 manifests, transcribed name by name from the original records at the National Archives. With this installment the project passes 50,000 entries — 50,475 in all.

Inside: the roll opens with another Creole — a river steamer out of Pensacola carrying just two men, both the master's own, their residence written as "on board." The steamer Cincinnati lands 28 people from Mobile, nearly all small children, on a sheet where the clerk swapped his sex and colour columns clean through (printed exactly as written). The brig Sabine's 20 all carry full surnames. The barque Bachelor sails twice — her Richmond certificate counts 72 but only 71 entries can be found (the gap is printed, nobody invented), and her Petersburg filing of 127 includes John Williams, who died on the passage, and Louisa Clarke, certified by the captain's own oath as never on board. On the Victorine, Kitty Snowden, 20, travels with Charlotte, 18 months, and an infant of two months named Kitty after her mother. A stray filing from 1842 is printed where the film keeps it.
