Module 4 - Money. A roof over our heads. Food, the basics
The Reflection Journal — Module 4: Money, a Roof and Food: The Basics
Somewhere to sleep, money you can use, and enough to get through the first weeks
From the outside, a household can look comfortable: a house, cars, holidays. But that means very little if you can’t reach the money, if the joint account could be frozen tomorrow, or if your wages land somewhere someone else controls.
You don’t need to fund your whole future before you leave. You need to know what you can actually use, where you could sleep, and how to get through the first few weeks.
Module 4 breaks the basics into small, manageable questions. It’s written by a survivor who started again with a motel room for a week and a blow-up mattress, and who found two forged signatures on contracts she’d never seen.
What’s inside
- Money that exists vs. money you can use: your own accounts, access codes, transfer limits, and where your income lands.
- Spending leaves a trail: the purchases and alerts that can show something has changed.
- Talk to someone who understands the system: how one private conversation with a bank manager changed everything, and why to get advice before moving any money.
- Your credit file: checking for debts in your name that you didn’t know about.
- The paper trail: which documents to quietly gather or copy before you go.
- The full checklist: identity, money, children, health, pets, and the things that can’t be replaced.
- A roof for now, and later: emergency options, and how to approach a landlord when you have no references.
- The cost of ordinary days: what the first month really costs, and what can wait.
- Help you may be entitled to: legal aid, benefits and community support.
- Bills, debts, and money used as control after you’ve left.
- Free, confidential helplines for the UK, US and Australia, and how to find yours elsewhere.
