Quick overview

This reader uses meaningful texts and stories to help reinforce the words and characters learned in the MCSB (Mandarin Chinese Sentence Building) textbook. The main MCSB textbook is designed to be printed out, but this reader can be read on screen or on paper. You’re welcome to use this PDF for self-study or to teach from, but please do not share the PDF online!

More information (optional reading)

This book is available in both paper & digital format & contains meaningful stories. The story texts are to help us practise the words & characters already learned in the Mandarin Chinese Sentence Building (MCSB) textbook. Go to https://waylink.co.uk/mandarin-chinese/mandarin-chinese-sentence-building-project/ for information, free preview, downloads & resources. Some texts are based on historical stories or accounts but have been reworded to include as many MCSB words as possible. Each text title states the highest section of the MCSB textbook being reviewed. Therefore, you must have learned up to & including that section before reading the text. For example, the story ‘MB 3B practice - A Blessing in Disguise’ requires us to have learned MCSB sections 1ABC, 2ABC & 3AB before reading. This is because the text includes words from all of those sections. The text ‘MB 5B practice - A Promising Youth Worth Teaching’ requires us to have learned all the words in sections 1,2,3,4, 5A & 5B before reading.

Extra new words

The texts also use some extra new words outside of Mandarin Building. These extra new words are shown before each text & have been made into digital flashcards on Quizlet – for more info please see: https://quizlet.com/join/6SXJdvG3D or go to Quizlet & search in ‘classes’ for MANDARIN CHINESE SENTENCE BUILDING READER STORY BOOK. Then click the request to join. Learn to recognise & say the sounds of the extra new words before reading each text. Learning to read the extra new words as characters is an optional extra challenge.

Multiple formats

Each text is shown in multiple formats and is suitable for reading on screen. If printing then do so selectively and do not press ‘print all’!

Formats:

1. Simplified & traditional character combination text with Mandarin Building character reading practice - characters already learned have no phonetics above, phonetics appear for extra new words only.

Formats 2 to 4 (below) available in simplified or traditional (not combined)

2. All phonetics above characters (easiest).

3. Mandarin Building character reading practice (challenging).

4. Only characters (most challenging).

5. Story summary & practice exercises.

Suggestion: read the combination text to practice the characters and get a feel for both traditional and simplified. Refer to format 2 (all phonetics shown) if need be. The characters only version (format 4) is optional reading for highly advanced learners only. But no matter your level, if you have the digital (on screen) version of this book then you can paste the characters only version into Microsoft word, Pleco or another app that has text to speech software, then listen again and again. This is a powerful method. See here for a video on how to do this: https://waylink.co.uk/vocabulary/handy-learning-tricks methods/
