504 more entries transcribed name by name from the National Archives' own scans — Roll 12, images 241–360, the inward manifests from December 1848 into spring 1849. 485 named, 19 unnamed, on 62 manifests.
Like the last book, this one opens by paying a debt. Installment 97 ended with the ketch Commerce's one-man table — Tom, 35, reported "died in the Passage" — and her Charleston papers just past the book's edge. They stand at image 241: Collector Dewey's certificate, the manifest "consisting of 1. (One Male Slave)." Count and table agree to the man; no correction is owed.
Also in this book: the barque Cyane's 166 people on one hull under two manifests (Richmond 65, Norfolk 101); the brig Union twice more — Campbell's certificate counting "42 in number" against 36 written lines, the six children folded into their mothers' lines rowed unnamed here, and Felix Saucer, 24, reported died on the passage; Rachel, found on board at the Balize with no clearance and no manifest line at all — the captain's own purchase in Alabama — rowed from the boarding officer's endorsement, the Mobile certificate's "five in number" against four table lines being her arithmetic; the steamship Palmetto's "10 Children" entered as one collective line, rowed as ten unnamed rows; Daniel, two months old, on his own numbered line; and Alice Hannan, 23, and her son George, 7, carrying their surname in full under a term-service oath.
Every name is transcribed by hand from the original manifests. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed — nothing is guessed, and nobody is tidied away.
