ROGER CHRISTIAN: POET OF THE STRIP (STREET AND BEACH)

THE ROGER VAL CHRISTIAN BIOGRAPHY

It is difficult to compile a musical biography of an individual who is no longer with us because questions you encounter in the process of putting all the pieces together can never be answered.

Thankfully, I was lucky enough to have interviewed Roger on two occasions; first in 1981 and again in 1985.

On both occasions he provided a wealth of material in the form of both information and artifacts.

At this point, all my interview material with Roger was injected into my biography on Gary Usher and, a few years later, portions made their way into my Jan & Dean book The Grand High Potentates Of California Rock, initially published in two volumes before being made available as a single E-Book (PDF).

Sadly, by this time Roger was no longer with us, so in compiling this musical biography on him I have had to rely on this ‘80s interview material, plus recollections from those who worked with him, particularly Gary Usher with whom he composed the greater majority of his musical portfolio.

In addition, interviews with Roger, conducted by other individuals over the years, have also been sourced and used with the appropriate credit given.

Nonetheless, Roger’s full story now remains tantalizingly out of reach, but what you will find within these pages will hopefully be enough of a record to provide Roger Christian with the credit he deserves and, up until this point, more or less denied.

Besides being a popular Los Angeles disc jockey working on three of the most popular stations KFWB, KRLA and KHJ, Roger’s efforts as a songwriter have found their way onto record (and now CD), motion pictures and, in particular, the national (and international) charts, with his greatest success being with Jan & Dean.

Then of course there are the numerous record albums on which his collaborations have been featured, particularly with Gary Usher whose album output during the 1963-65 period essentially matched that of Jan & Dean and the Beach Boys combined.

Roger Christian, like Gary Usher, was a musical journeyman who could put himself to any musical task more or less unhindered by a one dimensional profile.

In addition, his dulcet tones as a disc jockey, and the influence he wielded, should not be underestimated and I hope that this book in some way does him justice …
