Ukkusiksalik Hooded Cowl

Polar bears, grizzlies, Arctic wolves and caribou: Ukkusiksalik National Park’s rolling ochre hills and lush tundra teem with wildlife, and are dotted with archeological reminders of the rich history of First Nations cultures that continue to live in this remote wilderness. Snowmobile across the frozen sea in winter. In summer, hike through wildflowers in the company of stone inuksuk, beneath the glow of Nunavut's Midnight Sun. 

The Ukkusiksalik Hooded Cowl is an accessory designed to be worn under a warm coat or parka and over a hat for extra insulation in the depths of an arctic winter. Or wear it as a stand alone accessory that serves the role of both hat and cowl in a milder climate. The laced up placket will hold the hood closed to keep out chill winds, or wear it open for a looser, cooler fit.

There is only one size listed, which should fit most adults comfortably. To make the piece smaller or larger, I would recommend using a thinner or thicker yarn and knitting to a similarly firm gauge as given.

Materials Needed:

- @400 yards of bulky weight yarn

- 5.5mm (US 9) circular needles *or size needed for gauge*

- end of round stitch marker

- 7 additional stitch markers

- darning needle for sewing edges of placket

Optional Materials Needed:

- additional @100 yards of bulky weight yarn for icord *or*

- ribbon or soft boot lace to lace up placket

- 5.5mm (US 9) dpn for three-needle bind off

- 5.5mm (US 9) straight needles for hood if preferred *or size needed for guage*

- additional circular needle for provisional cast on, if desired

Note that there is no chart with this pattern; all instructions are written only. The construction is modular so no pieces need to be sewn together, *however* there is some finishing work that requires sewing.
