GROW Your Coaching Skills

A Practical Coaching Development Workbook for PDIs & ADIs

Knowing the GROW model is one thing. Knowing how to coach a real learner is another.

Effective coaching isn't about memorising questions or following a script. It's about listening, understanding your learner, recognising their needs and choosing the right approach to help them develop.

This practical 67-page KWDD workbook helps PDIs and ADIs develop their coaching skills through realistic driving scenarios, questioning activities, guided reflection and practical exercises.

What's included?

• 60 GROW coaching questions covering Goal, Reality, Options/Obstacles and Way Forward.
• 10 realistic driving-lesson coaching challenges.
• Practical THINK → COACH → REFLECT activities.
• Five example coaching conversations.
• Guidance on developing 10 essential coaching skills, including rapport, active listening and a non-judgemental approach.
• Activities exploring learners' thoughts, feelings, beliefs and confidence.

• Self-evaluation and coaching-skills progress reviews.

Who is it for?

PDIs preparing for their ADI Part 3 test, qualified ADIs preparing for a standards check, and instructors who want to become more effective coaches.

The KWDD approach

This workbook encourages you to think for yourself before examining possible coaching approaches.

You'll learn to look beyond what a learner says they want to practise and explore what they actually need.

You'll also develop the judgement to recognise when coaching is appropriate and when clear instruction or intervention is necessary.

Think critically. Coach with purpose. Develop independent learners.
