Charles DUVOIS | Ave Maria | for Brass Trio

Charles Duvois (1821 or 1830–1892) was a French composer, organist, and pedagogue whose career unfolded within the devotional and educational traditions of 19th‑century France. Born in Strasbourg, he combined practical musicianship with a scholarly bent, publishing instructional works such as Principes théoriques et pratiques de la musique and Le mécanisme du piano.

Among his compositions, the Ave Maria (published in 1875) stands out as a representative example of his style. It reflects the intimate, practical scale of parish and chapel music rather than the grandiosity of concert settings. The piece aligns with the devotional spirit of the time, offering a lyrical, accessible treatment of the traditional Marian prayer. Alongside his O salutaris and Tantum ergo, Duvois’s Ave Maria illustrates how composers of his generation contributed to the everyday soundscape of French Catholic worship—music designed less for fame
