Place de Vendome Paris France, 1940's

Place Vendôme is one of Paris’s most elegant squares, famous for its harmonious architecture, luxury jewelers, and the towering Vendôme Column at its center. My late grandfather photographed the Place de Vendome, Paris, France, 1940's in the late 1940s and then developed the negative in his darkroom, and I used the original negative to print this wonderful historic image. I love this photo, as you can see the police officer smiling at my grandfather, priceless!

Historical Background

  • Origins in 1698: Commissioned by Louis XIV to glorify his reign and military victories.
  • Architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart: Designed the square with uniform façades, creating a perfectly symmetrical octagonal layout.
  • Early Names: Initially called Place des Conquêtes, later Place Louis-le-Grand, before becoming Place Vendôme.
  • Equestrian Statue of Louis XIV: Installed in 1699, destroyed during the French Revolution in 1792.
  • Vendôme Column: Erected by Napoleon I in 1810 to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz, modeled after Trajan’s Column in Rome. Cast from bronze melted down from enemy cannons.

💎 Cultural & Modern Significance

  • Luxury Jewelers: Since the late 19th century, Place Vendôme has become the epicenter of haute joaillerie. Boucheron opened the first boutique here in 1893, followed by Chaumet, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels.
  • Hôtel Ritz Paris: Opened in 1898, the Ritz remains one of the world’s most famous hotels, hosting royalty, celebrities, and writers like Ernest Hemingway.
  • Fashion & Elegance: The square is often used for fashion shoots and haute couture presentations, reinforcing its reputation as a symbol of Parisian luxury.
  • Historic Events: Place Vendôme witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1763), which ended the Seven Years’ War, and the dramatic toppling of the Vendôme Column during the Paris Commune in 1871 (later rebuilt).

✨ Why It Matters

Place Vendôme embodies the intersection of history, architecture, and luxury. From royal propaganda under Louis XIV to Napoleon’s triumphal column, and now as the home of world-class jewelers and the Ritz, it reflects Paris’s evolution from monarchy to modernity.
