Living on the edge

I love living between lighthouses, icebergs and wild blueberries and the island of Newfoundland has all three.

And lots more, including its very own timezone, where you can see the earliest sunrise in North America.

After living for more than ten years on the Canadian mainland, I move to the famous island in the middle of the Atlantic.

I get to taste the world famous iceberg beer at its source, live right next to a huge Puffin colony

and experience living in a small up-cycled shipping container-studio apartment in a tiny outport.

I have traveled a lot and have lived and worked in many interesting corners of the world. The colourful island of Burano, tiny mountain villages in the Himalayas, the metropolis of Vancouver, the Olympic Village Whistler, the Gulf Islands off the coast of British Columbia. But none of those wonderful places touched me like my favourite place of all, the island of Newfoundland.

This is the story of my first come-from-away island years.

CATRIN

enjoys living with a small carbon foot print, long beach walks and picking up beach plastic, as well as discovering new places off-line.

As a translator, language tutor and active food saver, she travels the world as a cat & home sitter. A highlight was living on a lama farm and walking a little runaway home.

She loves reading and also the public book cupboards she finds on her numerous adventures.

She has explored North America from coast to coast by train and discovered many little independent bookshops on her journeys.

She is a fan of slow food & slow travel.

She has been supporting The Gathering Place in St. John's Newfoundland for years.

A very special place in the heart of the island capital, it's a place, where people in need can get a hot cup of tea, a warm meal and a kind smile.

Even a hot shower and a bed, 24/7. Free of charge.

Thanks to hundreds of great volunteers and supporters.

Part of the proceeds of this book will be donated to this worthy cause.
