The Copper Age Cucuteni–Trypillia culture flourished across modern-day Ukraine, Moldova, and parts of Romania, representing one of the most complex farming societies of Neolithic Europe. Its origins lie in the spread of early agriculturalists from Anatolia into the Balkans, particularly through groups related to the Starcevo culture. Over time, Trypillia communities developed large, proto-urban settlements, sometimes housing thousands of people, and maintained long-distance exchange networks stretching into the steppe and the Carpathian Basin.

As Trypillia expanded eastward, it came into increasing contact with steppe populations descended from early pastoralists. This interaction zone played a key role in shaping the genetic and cultural landscape that preceded the rise of the Yamnaya culture. Later, the Corded Ware culture emerged as a fusion of steppe ancestry—closely related to steppe eneolithic—and European Neolithic farmer ancestry, much of which ultimately traced back to groups like Trypillia.

For this video, I’ve prepared the raw genomes of 2 Trypillian samples, one from 2024 and the other from the recently published Akbari study.
