In the spring of 2018, I decided to take a trip to a place I had never been before—Guatemala. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but had done my research and knew that, at the very least, I was going to Antigua and Panajachel.
Antigua was fascinating from a historical perspective, but a little touristy for my tastes. Panajachel was exactly what I thought it would be, a lakeside resort town with amazing views of the volcanoes that surround it. It is, as Aldus Huxley wrote, almost too much of a good thing.
I travelled around the lake to San Pedro Laguna and the hippy enclave of San Marcus, ate fish dinners in the warm sunshine. Chicicastanego, reputedly the largest market in America, was overwhelming but well worth the trip.
