Better Dig Two is a work of historical fiction set during the Bleeding Kansas era — the period of guerrilla violence that tore the Kansas-Missouri border apart in the years before and during the Civil War. The title comes from an old frontier saying: “When you go looking for trouble, you better dig two graves.”

The novel follows the survivors of Quantrill’s Raid on Lawrence — one of the most brutal civilian massacres in American history — as they reckon with what happened and what it cost them. It is a story about trauma, justice, and the price of revenge in a landscape where the law was still being invented.

The research is meticulous. Lawrence, Kansas in the 1860s — its streets, its people, its politics — is rendered with the care of someone who walked the ground. Because the author did.
