The Trig Hat is a quick and satisfying knit that looks more complex than it truly is. It features bold, chunky ‘ball’ and ‘wheat’ cables, which neatly decrease into the crown.

It is designed to accommodate a range of gauges. A tighter gauge (14 sts and 19 rows per 10 cm / 4") will create a smaller hat with a neater, closer fit. A looser gauge (13 sts and 16 rows per 10 cm / 4") will create a larger hat with a more relaxed fit and additional slouch at the crown. For the fold over option, this can be adjusted somewhat by where the band is folded.

It is made with bulky yarn but can also be worked in DK yarn held double

The beanie is worked in the round from the bottom up.

Difficulty Level:

The pattern is designed for beginner knitters.

Sizing:

The pattern is sized for medium female heads.

Yarn:

The photographed example is worked in a chunky/ bulky yarn. Some examples are:

  • Touch Yarns Chunky, 100% New Zealand Wool, 110 m per 100 grams.
  • Cascade 128 Superwash, 100% Merino Superwash Wool, 117 m per 100 grams.
  • Adore - African Expressions 14Ply Mohair & Merino, 20% Kid Mohair, 80% Merino Wool, 120 m per 100 grams.
  • Naturally Big Natural, Chunky/14Ply, 100% NZ Wool, 172 m per 150 grams.

You can also substitute the chunky/bulky yarn with DK yarn held double, but confirm the gauge is consistent.

Gauge:

13-14 stitches and 18-19 rows per 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette.

Needles:

  • 7 mm circular needles (or circular needles sized to achieve gauge) in a length of about 45 cm (18 inches).
  • Longer circular needle in the same size to complete the crown using the magic loop method (or four double-pointed needles).
  • 6.5 mm circular needles (or one size down from those used to achieve gauge) in a length of about 45 cm for the ribbing.
  • Cable needle.
