Zak is grappling with three problems:

how to get his parents to stop arguing,

how to decide romantically between Sally and Jo,

and how to find a single tile that tessellates but only non-periodically.

Zak is eighteen, and is troubled by the daily conflict between his parents. He accidentally runs into the tiling wizard Mr Tessacadabra, who runs a (rather unsuccessful) tiles shop in Zak's home town. Mr T spots Zak's natural talent for tiling patterns, and offers him a job. When Zak accepts, he upsets their town rival, that is, the unimaginative purveyor of grey square tiles Squares R Us.

Meanwhile, Zak's love-life is confused: he's being pursued by Sally, a girl in his maths class, but he’s also attracted to Jo, who’s both Mr T's daughter and the company slab-layer. With the help of some beautiful maths, and a huge tiling machine called Tess, Zak shakes up the world of tessellations, and turns around the fortunes of Mr Tessacadabra. That’s when Squares R Us take an unthinkable and most terrible revenge...
