Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

"Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus" (Charles Wesley) has been set to many melodies, but none are so distinctively American as Walker's Southern Harmony pentatonic melody. This beautiful melody can now be found in most every hymnal.

The first third of the prelude begins with lush harmonies evoking a hint of jazz. The middle of the piece is an improvisation on the tune that is plaintive and contemplative. The final section is set in the classic pentatonic tradition reminding one of the strength and durability of America's pioneers. A perfect way to close out Advent.
