THE SMALL HUMILIATIONS OF STARTING OVER

A 40-Page Guided Journal & Workbook for Reclaiming Dignity, Independence & Self-Trust

Nobody talks enough about how humiliating starting over can feel.

We celebrate the comeback stories. We applaud the people who rebuild their lives. We love the beautiful quotes about resilience, fresh starts, and becoming stronger through adversity.

But what about everything that happens before the comeback?

The embarrassment of needing help with things you once handled yourself. The discomfort of depending on other people. The financial struggles. The shame of feeling behind in life. The quiet resentment of having to rebuild something you once already had.

What about being grateful for a second chance while simultaneously hating the circumstances you’re living in?

That’s what this journal is about.

I created The Small Humiliations of Starting Over from a place I know intimately.

After losing so much of the life I’d built, I found myself approaching forty, living with my parents, without a driver’s license, working to regain financial independence, and trying to rebuild an identity beyond the worst chapters of my life.

I learned that starting over isn’t always empowering.

Sometimes it’s embarrassing. Sometimes it’s lonely. Sometimes it requires swallowing your pride so many times that you begin to wonder whether you have any left.

And sometimes the hardest part isn’t rebuilding your life.

It’s learning how to respect yourself while you’re still living in the wreckage.

What’s Inside This 40-Page Workbook?

This is more than a collection of inspirational quotes or generic journal prompts. It’s a deeply reflective, practical guide designed to help you confront the uncomfortable emotions that accompany rebuilding.

Inside, you’ll explore:

  • Shame vs. accountability: Taking responsibility for your past without making self-punishment your future.
  • The discomfort of dependence: Learning to accept help without believing you’ve become a burden.
  • Financial insecurity and self-worth: Separating what you earn from what you’re worth.
  • Gratitude and resentment: Understanding why you can appreciate someone’s generosity and still desperately want your independence.
  • Rebuilding self-trust: Learning to believe in yourself through small, consistent actions.
  • Boundaries and asking for help: Finding your voice without excessive apologies or guilt.
  • Practical rebuilding exercises: Identifying achievable steps toward greater stability and independence.
  • A 30-day dignity tracker: Recognizing progress that doesn’t always show up in your bank account or living circumstances.

You’ll also find thoughtful writing prompts, guided reflection exercises, and plenty of space to work through your answers honestly.

Who Is This Journal For?

This workbook is for anyone who has ever looked at their life and wondered, How did I end up back here?

It’s for the person rebuilding after addiction, incarceration, divorce, grief, financial hardship, a difficult relationship, or a major life transition.

It’s for the adult who feels embarrassed about needing assistance.

It’s for the person who is making progress but can’t stop comparing their life to everyone else’s.

And it’s for anyone who has mistakenly started believing that their current circumstances determine their value.

A Final Thought

I won’t promise this journal will magically transform your circumstances.

It won’t pay your bills, restore what’s been lost, or eliminate the difficult work ahead.

But it might help you stop treating yourself as a failure simply because your life looks different from what you imagined.

You deserve to acknowledge your struggles without becoming ashamed of them.

You deserve to want more without dismissing what you’ve already accomplished.

And you deserve dignity now, not just when you’ve finally reached the other side.

You don’t become worthy of a better life the day you finally rebuild it. You were worthy all along.

With love,

Rising Through Ruin
