As educators, we often find ourselves short on time, racing to capture those valuable learning moments while juggling a full classroom. Worse, many of us aren't sure how to accurately document these observations in a way that truly reflects a child’s progress. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the lack of time or unsure of the best practices for recording learning milestones, you're not alone.

Learning Notes can be a solution for your problems with writing observations!

Learning Notes the tool developed by Ken Blaiklock have become a popular tool in early childhood education, offering a straightforward and practical method for recording and assessing children’s learning experiences. Introduced as an alternative to Learning Stories, Learning Notes help educators capture important moments in a child’s development quickly and effectively. Unlike Learning Stories, Learning Notes are easier to produce and can be used more frequently, allowing for a broader range of assessments across important learning areas for each child (Blaiklock, 2010). I will explore the shift from Learning Stories to Learning Notes and explain how this new approach benefits both educators and children.

This handout explains what are learning notes and how to use them.
