Finding the Names — Installment 63 (Roll 8, 1838–1839) — FREE
Finding the Names — Installment 63 continues the transcription of the original New Orleans inward slave manifests held by the National Archives (Record Group 36, Roll 8, NAID 173898130, "Inward Manifests, 1837–1841"), images 121 through 240. Every name has been typed out by hand from the original handwritten manifests — 270 entries (265 named) on 58 manifests, exactly as written, including the clerks' mistakes, corrections, and contradictions, which are printed honestly rather than tidied away.
Inside: the Adelaide three times under full surnames — 29 people named exactly (Peyton Carter, Davy Lawson, Ed Jackson, Emily Lewis, Sarah Washington among them); the Glasgow, whose New Orleans endorsement is dated 1 May 1838 while her Baltimore oath is dated 11 October 1838 — dates that cannot both belong to one sailing; the R. H. Douglass, shipped Baltimore to Savannah yet filed at New Orleans, her certificate counting "Six" entries that describe seven people ("Sarah & inf."); two boys both named Joseph on a single Giraff trip; Dinah of the Homer, her age written out as "Seventy," owned and shipped by Catharine A. Marsh, who signed her own oath; Abraham and Grandison of the Montgomery, their residence given simply as "Army" — Seminole War-era men shipped from Tampa; Pompey, 14, whose stature was entered as "Boy"; a woman named Victor, 45; and Nancy, "3 Months old an infant."

Please share this freely. These records name people who were treated as cargo; every name recovered is a thread a descendant may follow home. No prices appear in these manifests, and no names have been invented — where the record is silent or contradicts itself, the book says so.
