Continuing Education Course: LGBTQIA+ Autistic Identities and Experiences (3 CEs)

The way that autistic people experience the world is impacted by other aspects of their identity, including gender and sexual orientation. Research has shown that autistics are more likely to identify as LGBTQIA+ compared to non-autistics, and so an understanding of these experiences is key in providing competent mental health care and support. By developing an understanding of neurodiversity-affirming care and the intersectional experiences of LGBTQIA+ clients, we can better serve them and meet their mental health needs.

This course is broken down into four parts:

  • An introduction to neurodiversity-affirming care and how this applies to the autistic community
  • An introduction to LGBTQIA+ identities and experiences, and how these identities share overlap with the autistic community
  • Common mental health challenges and support needs for LGBTQIA+ autistic clients
  • Additional perspectives from other queer autistic individuals about their experiences
