Element of Art Value Art Lessons Art Projects Value Art Activities Worksheets
This Element of Art Value Unit teaches students how to use light and dark to create depth and mood in their artwork. It includes 10 sequential value drawing lessons, printable shading worksheets and value-based art activities.
It is designed for upper elementary and middle school students in Grades 4 to 9. Students explore hatching, stippling, monochromatic shading and still life drawing using value, from shading a sphere to a popcorn still life, a stippled animal and a monochromatic self-portrait. Use it in sketchbooks, as full art lessons or as part of a year-long art curriculum.

Teach it as a 2-week value drawing unit, or pull individual activities into your broader Elements of Art curriculum. The lessons also suit independent practice, sketchbook warm-ups and guided instruction in shading and tonal work, in the art room, in homeschool art lessons or in a sketchbook program.
