Work Refusal Flowchart and Staff Script Cards: Student Refusal De-escalation, High School
A work refusal flowchart and staff script cards for middle school, high school, and 18 to 21 programs. When a student says no, most of us talk too much, too loud, and too soon. I did too. This set gives every adult in the room the same plan and the same words for each stage of refusal.
Who it is for: special education teachers, paras, subs, case managers, and behavior teams in grades 6 to 12 and transition programs. It also fits adapted PE and community job sites.
Why I made this: I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years. The first 10 seconds after a no matter most, and most adults were never given words for them. Refusal is communication. The goal is a calm room, a student who keeps their dignity, and a smaller step back into the work.
What's included (one 15 page PDF):
• What's Under the No: 10 common reasons students refuse
• A one page refusal flowchart, from before the no to reentry
• 5 stage pages (first no, head down, escalation, recovery, reentry) with what to do, 30 say this, not that swaps, and notes for PE, job sites, and the community
• A page just for refusing to transition
• 16 staff script cards to cut and clip to a lanyard
• A fill in flow for one student, plus an after refusal debrief page
How I use it: I print the flowchart for every adult who works with the student and clip a set of script cards to each lanyard. At the next team meeting we fill in the flow for one student, and after a hard day we use the debrief page together instead of placing blame.
What you download: one printable PDF, 15 pages, US Letter.
Scope: this is everyday calm support for refusal, not emergency or restraint protocol training. It does not cover restraint, seclusion, or crisis holds. Follow the student's IEP or behavior plan and your district's crisis procedures.
