Your RAG system can be fluent, cited, and wrong for nineteen days while every dashboard stays green. 42 production templates & checklists distilled from Chapters 1–6 of RAG Observability & Debugging: the five questions every trace must answer, document passports and parse coverage on the write side, candidate capture and rerank deltas on the read path, one trace schema and one correlation ID that survive queues and batch jobs, privacy-safe query logging, and retrieval-quality signals sliced so rot cannot hide inside an average. PDF + Markdown source.

## The answer was fluent, cited, and wrong. Nothing had failed.

For nineteen days, a claims assistant quoted last year's coverage wording to policyholders — calmly, completely, with a real citation attached — while uptime, latency, and the error budget all stayed green. The new wording was in the index. The generator was faithful to its context. The old document simply outranked the new one, nobody had recorded the contest, and reconstructing the incident afterwards took three days. **RAG Observability & Debugging — Part 1** is the instrumentation that makes that story impossible to repeat blind: 42 copy-paste templates and checklists distilled from Chapters 1–6 of the dedicated RAG observability book — answer the five questions every trace must answer, give every document a passport and every chunk its provenance, capture the full candidate set and the reranker's movements, hold every service to one trace schema and one correlation ID, log the question without betraying the asker, and chart signals that taste the answer instead of the machine.

Every template carries the book's tested positions built in: a trace that records the original question and every rewritten form, the full candidate list including the discarded candidates, both retrieval and rerank orders with a signed delta per candidate, the assembled context exactly as the generator received it, a document passport minted before parsing and appended to — never edited — at every stage, parse coverage measured per structural element with a quarantine lane for suspect parses, chunk identifiers derived from document, version, and character offsets, a queue envelope that carries the correlation ID as attributes separate from the message body, write-time redaction with typed placeholders and a salted query fingerprint that makes traces joinable but not readable, and quality signals — zero-result rate, score shape, citation coverage, refusal rate in two stacks — sliced by tenant, language, and document class with the sample size printed on every chart. Where the book gives an example — its retention windows, its worked storage arithmetic, its signal readings — the template labels it as the book's example for you to tune. Bracketed fields are yours to fill; nothing here invents a threshold for your system.

### Who this is for

Retrieval and platform engineers who operate a production RAG system, search and AI engineers asked why an assistant gave a wrong answer it cannot reconstruct, and engineering leads whose dashboards are green while users report stale, missing, or invented answers. The source book assumes a working retrieval pipeline — the pipeline's architecture itself is a different book in the same series; this pack instruments the pipeline you have. If your team cannot answer, for one disputed answer, which candidates were considered, what order was imposed, what context was assembled, and which versions were in force — in one sitting — start at Template 1.

### What this pack is not

- **Not Part 2.** Golden sets and continuous evaluation, the failure taxonomy, the debugging playbooks for bad answers and for latency / cost / edge cases, drift detection and quality SLOs, the end-to-end incident rooms, and the book's Appendices A–B are Chapters 7–12 of the same book. They live in the Part 2 companion pack; nothing here restates it, and this pack is complete and useful without them.

- **Not general AI observability — this is the explicit boundary with Product #10.** The *AI Observability Templates & Checklists* pack (Product #10) covers general AI observability from a different book: LLM-app telemetry schemas, agent tracing, prompt registries, production eval harnesses, cost ledgers, latency profiling, drift, and SLOs for AI systems in general. This pack is RAG-pipeline observability only — ingest, retrieval, and generation instrumentation for retrieval systems, from the dedicated RAG book: document lineage, candidate capture, rerank deltas, RAG trace schemas, privacy-safe query logging, and retrieval-quality signals. The two packs do not restate each other.

- **No runnable platform or tooling.** The book's span-recorder, lineage, validator, redactor, and aggregator listings are small teaching shapes. The pack ships the templates that specify, audit, and operate these components — not a working tracing platform, redaction service, or telemetry backend.

- **No vendor or platform guidance.** Chapters 1–6 select, install, and configure no observability vendor or platform, and this pack adds none.

- **No guarantee of detection or answer quality.** The book's own position: signals accuse circumstances, not culprits; recall proxies are shadows, not proof. These templates make failures findable and answers reconstructible — they do not promise that your system will catch every failure or that its answers will be right.

- **Not RAG architecture or chunking strategy.** The pipeline's architecture and the science of chunk boundaries are other books in the author's series, named by the source where it defers to them. This pack covers the evidence the architecture must emit — lineage, traces, and signals — not the architecture itself.

### Companion products

**RAG Observability & Debugging — Part 2: Golden Sets, Failure Taxonomy, Debugging Playbooks & SLOs Templates** is this pack's sibling, built from Chapters 7–12 and Appendices A–B of the same book: a companion for when your instrumentation is in place and you are ready to cross-examine it — never a requirement for this pack to work. The **AI Observability Templates & Checklists** pack (Product #10) is the cross-book companion for general AI observability beyond the retrieval pipeline. This pack stands alone.

*Note: the $99 Architecture Templates Bundle currently contains Products #1–#3 only. This pack launches standalone; no bundle inclusion is promised for this product.*

Built by the author of **RAG Observability & Debugging: Tracing Answers Back to the Chunk That Caused Them**, from the instrumentation discipline behind production retrieval systems.
