## The strategy was fine. The text it received was scrambled.

A claims team queried 1,900 policy PDFs and got answers that quoted sentences that were almost the policy's sentences — clauses interleaved with fragments of the adjacent column, definitions fused with the sidebar examples that glossed them. The chunking strategy was blamed and twice re-tuned, at real cost, with no effect — because the splitter was faithfully respecting paragraphs that were extraction artifacts: the PDF's two columns had been read straight across. The fix was entirely upstream, and recall rose by double digits the day extraction was repaired, on chunks cut by the previously "failing" strategy. That story (Alder Mutual, the book's fictional worked example) is the second half of chunking in one incident, and **Chunking: The Complete Science — Part 2** is its working half: 43 copy-paste templates and checklists distilled from Chapters 6–12 and Appendices A–B of the dedicated chunking book — chunk code, tables, and records by their own grammar, repair hostile inputs before any strategy touches them, design the finished chunk and its metadata contract, build the evaluation harness that makes every claim checkable, read the book's measured results, run the failure atlas as standing audits, and operate the whole practice in production.

Every template carries the book's tested positions built in: the unit of code is the callable with its signature and frame attached, no chunk may contain a cell whose row and column meaning it does not also contain, one record one chunk with its schema as frame, segmentation cannot repair extraction, overlap is redundancy priced honestly and usually zero on boundary-chosen strategies, rank small and read big, metadata omitted at chunk time is unrecoverable at incident time, gold questions are harvested from real life and never written from the documents, and the configuration is the segmentation — versioned, stamped on every chunk, gated by the harness. Where the book gives an example — its fictional worked examples, its illustrative reference-corpus findings — the template labels it as the book's, exactly as the book frames it. Bracketed fields are yours to fill; nothing here invents a setting for your corpus.

**3. Anatomy of a Retrievable Chunk — Overlap, Windows & Metadata (6)** — Overlap Economics Audit — redundancy, priced honestly · Parent–Child Retrieval Design Sheet — rank small, read big · Window Expansion Policy Template — widen at query time, respect the seams · Chunk Contract Template — metadata as a first-class citizen · Chunk Store & Context-Budget Architecture Sheet — three stores, one budget · Chunk Identity, Citation Graph & Lifecycle Sheet — updates, drift, and death

**4. The Evaluation Harness — Measure, Don't Guess (6)** — Gold-Set Harvesting Worksheet — real questions, marked passages · Gold-Set Sizing, Sampling & Refresh Sheet — an exam that discriminates · Annotator Craft & Marking Guidelines Template — passages that deserve the name gold · Harness Metrics Scorecard — recall, reachability, precision, completeness · Experimental Protocol Sheet — one variable, per segment, with doubt · Harness-as-Gate & Roadmap Sequencing Record — the instrument becomes a quality system

**5. Benchmark Results — What the Measurements Say (the Book's Findings) (5)** — Reference Corpora & Benchmark Method Record — the book's setup, stated in full · Book's Findings One & Two Sheet — the negligent default, and structure where structure is real · Book's Finding Three Sheet — type discipline dwarfs strategy choice · Book's Repairs & Interactions Results Sheet — priced by segment, never by average · Results Matrix, Bootstrap & Null-Results Record — report the doubt with the digits

**6. The Failure Atlas — Twelve Ways Chunking Breaks Retrieval (5)** — Boundary Failures Detector Sheet — Severed Claim, Split Table, Straddle, Confetti Field · Context Failures Detector Sheet — Orphaned Pronoun, Headerless Wonder, Exception as Rule · Surface & Scale Failures Detector Sheet — Boilerplate Band, Duplication Storm, Dilution Sink · Lifecycle Failures & Compounding-Order Sheet — Stale Twin, Silent Drift, and how failures hide each other · Atlas Audit Afternoon & Incident Post-Mortem Template — detectors in an afternoon, incidents in atlas vocabulary

**7. Production Pipelines — Versioned, Routed, Monitored (5)** — Chunking Configuration Artifact Template — the configuration is the segmentation · Re-Indexing Economics & Switching Worksheet — the price of changing your mind · Census & Routing Table Template — knowing what you hold · Decision Procedure Run Sheet — from corpus to configuration in one afternoon · Monitoring, Change Management & First-Ninety-Days Plan — operate the fit, land the change

### Who this is for

RAG and platform engineers who own a production retrieval index, search and AI engineers whose corpora are manuals, repositories, tickets, decks, and call recordings rather than clean prose, and technical leads who must defend segmentation decisions with measurements instead of folklore. The source book assumes you run, or are building, a retrieval system; no machine-learning research background is required. If nobody in your organisation can say which configuration made the chunks in your index — or whether your tables' numbers still know what they number — start at Template 1.

### What this pack is not

- **Not Part 1.** The recall ceiling and the fifty-chunk inspection, the fixed-size baseline discipline and its sweep, recursive and structural splitting, semantic chunking, and late chunking and contextual retrieval as strategies are the book's Chapters 1–5. They live in the Part 1 companion pack; nothing here restates them, and this pack is complete and useful without them. Where a template presupposes a tuned baseline, it records that as a field to fill from your own work.

- **Not a general RAG architecture pack.** Product #2, RAG Architecture Templates, designs the retrieval pipeline end to end from a different book. This pack is chunking only — type discipline, hostile inputs, chunk anatomy, measurement, and production operation. The two packs do not restate each other.

- **No runnable code or tooling.** The book's miniature splitters, transcript chunker, harness, bootstrap, linter, and router are simplified, structurally honest demonstrators described inside the chapters. The pack ships the templates that specify, audit, and operate these components — not a working splitter, evaluation harness, linter, or router.

- **No independent benchmark results.** Section 5 reports the book's own findings on its described reference corpora, labeled as the book labels them — illustrative results of its methodology, not transferable constants and not a promise about your corpus. Your harness produces your numbers.

- **No guaranteed recall gain.** The book's own position: the right configuration is a property of your corpus and your segment, proven by measurement against a tuned baseline — and a measured difference whose interval crosses zero is a tie.

### Companion products

**Chunking: The Complete Science — Part 1: Chunking Strategy Templates** is this pack's sibling, built from Chapters 1–5 of the same book — the ceiling, the baseline discipline, structural and semantic splitting, and the context repairs: a companion for the strategy half — never a requirement for this pack to work. This pack stands alone.

*Note: the $99 Architecture Templates Bundle currently contains Products #1–#3 only. This pack launches standalone; no bundle inclusion is promised for this product.*

Built by the author of **Chunking: The Complete Science**, from the segmentation discipline behind production retrieval systems.
