When stressed-out Los Angeles marketing executive Molly accepts Kate's invitation to spend Christmas in her tiny hometown in Minnesota, her greatest fear is dying of boredom or frostbite. The trip starts on a promising note when Kate's high-school crush Cliff appears, and Molly realizes he'd be the perfect brand mascot for the outdoors clothing brand she's struggled to promote.

As she hatches a scheme to lure Cliff to Los Angeles and away from his marijuana startup in Colorado, she starts to get strange vibes from the townspeople. As a Chinese-American, she's the only nonwhite face in town except for exchange student Yumi, which whom she's constantly confused.

Molly overhears everyone referring to her and Yumi as “candidates”—for what, no one will say. Nor does anyone explain the vaguely sinister stone engraving welcoming strangers into their midst. Or the town’s Christmas ornaments, crudely hand-painted with cliched images of dark-skinned faces in ethnic costumes. And is it just her imagination, or does everyone in town really show more gray hair and wrinkles as the day goes on?
