Build the Punctuation (FREE)
Help pupils understand where direct-speech punctuation belongs by letting them physically build each sentence.
Build the Punctuation is a free, practical KS2 English activity featuring movable sentence strips, speech marks, commas and end-punctuation cards. Pupils arrange the parts, explain their choices and then record each correctly punctuated sentence.
This visual, hands-on approach makes an abstract grammar rule easier to see and understand. It’s particularly helpful for dyslexic and neurodivergent pupils, as well as children who benefit from reduced writing demands before working independently.
Inside this eight-page printable pack:
• A clear teacher guide
• A ready-to-use 20-minute lesson sequence
• Four differentiated punctuation-card activities
• Statements, questions and exclamations
• Speech before and after the reporting clause
• A pupil recording sheet
• An independent dialogue-writing challenge
• Child-friendly success criteria
• Teacher answers and discussion prompts
Suitable for:
