The road south carries Joe back into memories of the church and the gospel music that surrounded his childhood.

At Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Reverend Nathaniel Jones and the Little Rock Choir are not exactly easing anyone gently into Sunday morning. Across two spirited gospel songs, the Reverend preaches, the choir answers and the congregation gets swept along for the ride.

For Joe, these are memories of gospel music at its most alive — full of voices, energy, community and just a little fire from the pulpit.

Smokin’ Joe Cotton is a work of historical musical fiction. Its characters and narrative are fictional, set against real periods of migration, segregation and cultural change. The album draws inspiration from African American blues and gospel traditions and encounters spiritual beliefs and traditions beyond Joe’s own musical journey. The Rock and Roll Rewind Project does not attempt to speak for those lived experiences. Through original music and storytelling, the project seeks to acknowledge, celebrate and explore the people, creativity and cultural influences behind the music.
