The Sicherheitsdienst (SD), or Security Service, was the intelligence agency of the SS and the Nazi Party, and its personnel wore uniforms closely aligned with those of the Allgemeine-SS, though with distinct features to denote their specialized role in intelligence, surveillance, and internal security. Early in the war, SD officers typically wore the black SS dress uniform, consisting of a sharply tailored black tunic and trousers, silver or white piping, a black tie, and a white shirt, paired with the iconic SS-visored cap bearing the Totenkopf (death’s head) and SS eagle insignia. The right collar tab bore the SS runes, while the left collar tab featured rank insignia. However, to identify them specifically as SD, many wore an SD diamond insignia—a black rhomboid patch with a white "SD"—on the lower left sleeve of the uniform.

As the war progressed, especially after the SS and SD expanded their field operations, particularly in occupied territories, SD personnel increasingly wore field-grey uniforms similar to the Waffen-SS, sometimes indistinguishable from military formations except for subtle insignia. These included grey-green tunics, combat trousers, and SS field caps (Einheitsfeldmütze), still adorned with the SD sleeve diamond. Rank was displayed on standard SS collar tabs and shoulder boards, and the cuff title “Sicherheitsdienst” was sometimes worn, although it was less common in frontline or undercover roles. In more administrative or Gestapo-linked roles, SD members could be seen in civilian suits with discreet party pins or SS insignia, especially in covert operations. The SD uniform, especially in its black ceremonial form, symbolized the feared bureaucratic and covert enforcement arm of the SS, projecting a chilling blend of formality and repression.
