More Than a Coin

Dr. King and the Sociological Imagination

Martin Luther King Jr. held a degree in sociology.

In 1967 he told a New York church that true compassion is more than a coin.

If you have ever dropped one in a cup, he was talking to you.

Picture a January morning in Calgary, minus twenty-two. Someone sits against the wall of a CTrain station with a paper cup. A commuter, late for a shift, drops in a coin and is gone. Nothing in those three seconds was unkind. Was it a private moment between two people? Yes. Was it only a private moment? The article follows that second question to the wages and rents behind the cup, then home with the commuter.

🎓 King took his sociology degree at Morehouse College in 1948, eleven years before C. Wright Mills named the sociological imagination. The article concedes the limits outright. A bachelor's degree does not make a sociologist, and the 1967 speech never mentions Mills.

🪑 Ten players, eight chairs. Speed and luck help decide who is left standing. They cannot explain why two people always are.

🍽️ The arrangements that leave one person outside in January also help decide who gets an unhurried evening with friends. The sociological imagination is for seeing both.

🪙 The coin is not the mistake. A coin reaches whoever the giver happens to pass. A guarantee is owed to everyone it names.

🏗️ Calgary's ten-year plan to end homelessness did not end it. Nearly 10,000 people were housed along the way.

For anyone who has dropped the coin, or walked past, and wondered what it left undone. Teachers and circle hosts get a one-page handout and five questions.

Download the article and try its four steps on one moment from your own week.
