AP World History: Modern Unit 4 – Transoceanic Interconnections | Activities, SAQs & LEQ

Teach AP World History: Modern Unit 4: Transoceanic Interconnections (c. 1450–1750) with a comprehensive, classroom-ready resource that combines essential historical content with the analytical and writing skills students need for success in AP World History.

This 54-page Unit 4 resource takes students beyond simple content review as they investigate how maritime exploration created new global connections and transformed economies, societies, cultures, labor systems, and patterns of empire between 1450 and 1750.

Students begin with engaging historical readings examining the Age of Transoceanic Interconnections, European exploration and maritime empires, and the Columbian Exchange. The readings explore technological innovations in navigation, European economic and political motivations, Portuguese and Spanish expansion, global silver flows, maritime trading companies, mercantilism, colonization, and the development of an increasingly interconnected global economy.

Primary Source Analysis & Historical Thinking

Students work directly with historical sources while practicing sourcing, contextualization, close reading, point of view, intended audience, corroboration, claims and evidence, and argument development.

Primary-source activities include Christopher Columbus’s 1493 account of his first voyage, Bartolomé de las Casas on Spanish colonization, and the 1602 Dutch East India Company (VOC) Charter. These activities require students to connect documentary evidence to larger developments such as European imperial expansion, treatment of Indigenous peoples, economic motivations, maritime empires, and joint-stock companies.

Built for AP World History Skill Development

Rather than asking students simply to memorize names and dates, Unit 4 challenges them to explain historical significance, apply vocabulary using evidence, analyze cause and effect, evaluate historical developments, and construct defensible historical arguments.

Students examine major Unit 4 topics including:

Maritime technology and exploration • Portuguese and Spanish expansion • Maritime empires • Columbian Exchange • Mercantilism • Global silver trade • Atlantic System • Encomienda and plantation economies • Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade • Joint-stock companies • VOC • Manila Galleons • Cultural syncretism • Global economic connections

The resource continually connects content knowledge to AP World History historical reasoning and exam preparation, helping students practice the skills they will eventually need for SAQs, LEQs, and document-based historical analysis.
