Six weeks after departure, Mara and her companions reach Vesper. Fresh water and breathable air offer hope, but a violent storm destroys their first water intake and leaves a worker trapped.

Survival demands cooperation. With their captains’ agreement, the settlers surrender equipment from their ships to build a reservoir, a power station, and a working water supply.

Then a trench exposes an unusual dark mineral. Among the rough pieces lies a fragment with a worked edge. Mara recognizes the material from a memory she cannot explain.

Their first home stands above something they never knew was there.
