This February Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for Grade 2 to 5 students. Students follow a simple directed drawing, create a February-themed illustration, and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

Drawing first means students are not starting from a blank page. They have something visual and personal to describe, explain or imagine, which gives them a stronger sense of ownership over their writing. The drawings follow February and Valentine themes: heart, chocolate, rose, bug, cupid, teddy bear, groundhog, tea, polar bear, snowdrop, card, strawberry, balloons, mask, hat, penguin, cat, owl, winter hat, candy, hot soup, shadow, bee, lantern and cupcake.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for daily writing practice, morning work, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans, Valentine's Day writing or homeschool writing practice. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a February booklet that students work through over time.

Students can write about what they created, add details, describe a setting, imagine a character or build a paragraph from their visual ideas. It works especially well for reluctant writers, creative students and visual learners, and it builds paragraph writing, creative writing, vocabulary, drawing confidence and fine motor skills.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Classroom teachers, homeschool educators, substitute teachers and art teachers working with Grade 2 to 5 students.

What kind of writing does it support?

Paragraph writing. Students complete a directed drawing and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

How long does each page take?

It depends on the student, your writing expectations and how much detail they add. One page may fit in one class or writing block, while more detailed drawings and polished paragraphs may take longer.

Is it editable?

No. It is a non-editable PDF.

Do students need to be strong artists?

No. The drawing steps are there so every student can succeed, and they can add their own details before they write.
