The exploration of Ephesus began in the late 19th century when archaeologists and historians recognized its immense historical and cultural significance. The first systematic excavations took place in 1869 under the direction of British archaeologist John Turtle Wood. Wood's excavations focused primarily on the Temple of Artemis, which had long been buried under layers of sediment. Although Wood's findings were groundbreaking, it was not until later expeditions that the true extent of Ephesus's splendour was revealed. In the early 20th century, Austrian archaeologist Otto Bendor and his team conducted extensive excavations, uncovering the well-preserved remains of the Library of Celsus, the magnificent Great Theatre, and various other structures that were integral to the daily life and social structure of the ancient city. These discoveries provided invaluable insights into the architecture, engineering, and cultural practices of Ephesus.
