THE TEXTURE LAB™ 003 — THE DRAGON | Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo
THE TEXTURE LAB™ 003 — THE DRAGON
Creative Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo | Grades 7–8
🐉 ONE DRAGON. A THOUSAND SCALES. ENDLESS CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES!
Can your learners bring a dragon to life using nothing but pencil strokes, patterns and imagination?
Welcome to The Texture Lab™, where simple outlines become extraordinary works of art!
In File 003 — The Dragon, learners embark on a mythical mark-making adventure, transforming an unfinished dragon illustration into a detailed creature filled with texture, depth and personality.
From overlapping scales and leathery wings to sharp horns and swirling smoke, every part of this magnificent creature presents a new artistic challenge!
THE CREATIVE CHALLENGE
Learners experiment with different pencil techniques to create:
- Dragon Scales: Repeated patterns, overlapping shapes and shading to create depth.
- Wings: Light, smooth shading and long, curved strokes to represent wing membranes.
- Horns and Spikes: Sharp, angular marks and darker shading to create realistic surfaces.
- Smoke: Soft, swirling lines and gentle shading to suggest movement.
- Claws and Rocks: Contrasting textures to bring additional detail to the scene.
The activity also features a visual Stroke Bank, introducing six mark-making techniques:
Hatching • Cross-hatching • Stippling • Scribbling • Contour Lines • Repeated Patterns
