Scottish Canals look after the country’s waterways, including the bridges, locks, tunnels, lighthouses - and of course the dramatic attractions of The Kelpies and The Falkirk Wheel. Built first for industry, the canals are now scheduled monuments and contribute to wellbeing, regeneration, heritage, biodiversity and tourism.

This shawl reflects the work of Scottish Canals with its five lengthening repeats of ‘feather and fan’ lace stitches to represent ripples in water or the wake of boats. These five sections are named after the Monkland Canal (2 miles), Crinan Canal (9 miles), Union Canal (31 miles), Forth and Clyde Canal (38 miles) and Caledonian Canal (60 miles). Each section is separated by 19 repeats of garter stitch , echoing the 19 water supply reservoirs which feed Scotland’s canal system. A deep ‘Feather and Fan’ border completes the shawl as canals meet the waves of the sea.
