In this three-part video, Daizan Roshi introduces Zen running. Many people associate Zen with sitting zazen but Daizan's teacher in Japan, Zen master Shinzan, was always very keen to emphasise Zen or meditation in activity, being a runner himself into his 80s.

There's quite a culture of running within Zen that Daizan has drawn out in these videos. In the first part he explores one of the most famous runs within Zen, that of the pilgrimage run up Mount Songshan in China to Bodhidharma's cave. In the second part he discusses some of the wider history and background to Zen running, including what the Buddha taught and what has evolved over the centuries in Zen monastic settings. In the third part he offers a practical workshop on prepararing the body for Zen running, including a look at physical alignment, the breath, and the meditative aspect.

In an additional video, Daizan interviews Shinkai Roshi about his experience of running at Bokkokuji, where Shinkai lived and trained for some years under Zen master Harada.

This video is suitable for all – whether you're a seasoned runner wanting to add a spiritual dimension to your exercise or a complete beginner wanting to add a more energetic component to your meditation practice. With no competitive or forceful component to it, Zen running is an accessible activity to all that can sustain a short, gentle jog.
